A Submarine for Oklahoma

Some communities may have a cannon or even a tank on loan from the US military displayed in a memorial park, but Muskogee, Oklahoma has something even more unique – a submarine. Having survived the Pacific Theater in WWII, the ship experienced as many near disasters making her way to the Port of Muskogee. The USS Batfish opened as a museum on Memorial Day 1973 (45 years ago!) Later I discuss my favorite punctuation mark. Listen now!

Is it a hardware store or a museum? If you ask the folks in Stilwell, they’d tell you Fletcher Hardware is a little of both. Step into the store and a time where customers gathered around a wood-burning stove and co-mingled business and socializing. You never know what you might come up with at Fletcher’s!

The making of the film “Where The Red Fern Grows,” based on the book by Wilson Rawls, provided a little Hollywood excitement to the Oklahoma summer when I turned 10 years old. It was even made all the more exciting due to the stars of the movie being from my hometown! Listen to this story and a segment about Protection, Kansas and their 15 minutes of fame!
