Sequoyah developed the Talking Leaves, a writing system,also known as the Cherokee syllabary, He never learned English nor to read or write in English, so the system came directly from his mind. The written language helped keep the Cherokee language alive because members of the tribe could read their laws, passages from the Bible and newspapers in their own language. Currently, the Cherokee Nation is making efforts to keep the spoken language and Sequoyah’s Talking Leaves.
